Jefferson Parker

Jefferson changed his life through yoga.  When he discovered yoga, he was living in constant and severe chronic pain and suffering from intense depression. Following a series of accidents, which caused substantial injury, he was physically limited and gained over 110 pounds. He was no longer able to paint, one of his many passions, and felt hopeless. Everyone in his life worried for his well-being, especially his family.

Jefferson's father Hal convinced him to try Bikram Yoga and after only a couple of classes, Jefferson met Bikram Choudhury. Bikram looked at Jeff's injured, overweight body and flat out promised, "Boss, you do my yoga every day and I will give you your life back." For weeks Jeff struggled but Bikram's encouragement gave him the faith he needed to continue in spite of his difficulties. After only six months of practice, Jefferson was physically well enough to attend the intense Bikram Teacher training.

After completing the Bikram Teacher training with Bikram Choudhury, Jefferson then trained in Bikram further with Mary Jarvis in San Francisco. Let's just say, Jefferson eventually lost those 110 pounds and got a new lease on life. By becoming physically fit through regular yoga practice, Jefferson was able to strengthen out his mind and spirit in addition to his body. He then decided he wanted to pass this gift on and help others gain control over their lives.

Being so inspired by the transformation in his life through yoga, Jefferson went on to open several Bikram Yoga studios around the country with locations in Nevada and Massachusetts. Due to further health complications and a desire to be near his family and hometown of Marin, Jefferson returned to San Rafael.

He took over what was then Yoga Loka, the 8th established Yoga College of India, changing the name to Bikram & Power Yoga San Rafael.  The studio is now called Frequency Yoga in order to encompass the array of multi-modilty offered at the center.  Part of the modality currently offered in addition to the original mission of Bikram Yoga is Vinyasa Yoga and TRX suspension training.  Jefferson trained in Vinyasa Yoga with Baron Baptiste (over 920 hours!) and has completed all the TRX training as well as Melt Method.

It was a fantastic studio when he took it over and it continued to flourish over the years. Our studio has won Best of Marin first place eight years in a row for yoga and spent several years in the Hall of Fame for Best of Marin.

Ever grateful for his restoration to health, he continues to operate Frequency Yoga and currently teaches regular Bikram classes on Monday and Wednesday morning.  He looks forward to meeting you and passing on this gift!

Katite Gumucio

After a friend's recommendation, I started doing yoga in the early 90's, and I started doing Bikram yoga in 1994. At the time, I liked the way I felt after class, and I really enjoyed spending time with the people in my classes.  Over the years, I've kept up with my practice because of the calm and clarity I get from it, and the improvements I see and feel in my body.
 
I trained with Bikram in Los Angeles in 1996, and I've taught for so long because I enjoy helping others with their practice, and it's very meditative for me to teach.

Jessica Smith

Jessica always thought yoga was for wimps who didn’t like a “real” workout. Being the atypical athlete from Santa Cruz, she never thought she would fall in love with a low-impact activity, like yoga. I mean, yoga isn’t even in the Olympics, so why would she take it seriously? However, two weeks after having her first child in 2011, she went running and ruptured her perineum stitches. That’s when she had to find “something else” to lose the weight.

Jessica began doing hot yoga when her first child was three weeks old. She was eager to get the baby weight off as quickly as possible. Then the magic of hot, hatha yoga crept into her body, her soul, her mind, and the weight ended up coming off too. Instead of just losing the 60 she had gained, she lost 80! Beyond the weight loss, hot yoga has opened Jessica’s mind and body to being able to do anything at any age. She comes from a dynamic, athletic background with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and aspirations of becoming a professional soccer player in her 20’s.

Now, seven ACL reconstructive knee surgeries and two kids later, Jessica's love of hot yoga has guided her from the corporate world to becoming a yoga instructor. Yoga has provided her the ability to make the most of her time with her family, as well as foster a deeper connection with her practice and guiding others through their own practice. Jessica is excited to introduce yoga as a part of your daily life to achieve a better work/life balance and experience true relaxation and peace. She truly believes that the mind-body relaxation experienced after yoga will increase your ability to stay focused and become more successful in your life. There is magic in this practice!

With the support of her oh-so-handsome husband, Jessica now teaches yoga in the Bay Area and enjoys time with her family when she’s not in the hot studio. Jessica has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and speaks Spanish. Her energetic-personality makes for a very inspiring, motivational, class experience.

This yoga allows me to breathe more easily, to see the trees blow in the wind, and actually take the time to stop and watch. An abbreviated version of the classic series, all 26 poses are practiced, some as single sets or flows. Helpful as a tune-up, to fit a busy schedule, or if you are recovering from illness and injury and are working on your stamina. All levels welcome.
